On August 6, 2021, Apple added detailed landcover coloring to its iOS 14 navigation map worldwide.
For most zooms, this makes all countries look like those already covered by Apple’s new map data. Other features of Apple’s new map data, like shapes for sports fields, have not been included.
Apple likely hasn’t included this detail on its main map because it becomes very coarse and stretched out at high zooms. For example, the area around the Eiffel Tower is now covered by a light green blob on Apple’s navigation map:
This appears to be the same landcover data that Apple added to its main map in iOS 15:
But even though it’s the same data, it has been styled to resemble the iOS 14-era cartography:
Now that Apple is giving users the option to remain on older versions of iOS, Apple may be migrating elements of iOS 15’s cartography back to iOS 14 (and earlier versions) so that it’s exposed to more users.
