As of late October, Google Maps appears to be testing labels for address numbers directly on its map in a number of countries, including the U.S., the U.K., and Canada.
Here’s how it looks in New York:
London:
Amsterdam:
San Francisco:
And Los Angeles:
One of the things that makes this change so interesting is that it gives every home its own clickable/tappable label.
(Before, homes were a kind of unnamed, negative space on the map—but with this change, they’re all effectively named. In other words, this change makes almost everything on the map a “POI”.)
Earlier versions of Google Maps displayed address numbers along city streets (usually 1–2 per block)...
...but this feature was quietly removed in 2013.
