All Countries Visited by Apple

As of 2023, Apple has now collected imagery in parts of thirty-eight countries and two semi-sovereign territories (e.g., Hong Kong and the Palestinian Territories)1—with the United Arab Emirates being the most recent surveyed:

Taken together, these forty geographies comprise 22.3% of the world’s total land area:

So far in 2023, Apple has surveyed two new areas:

Countries Surveyed by Apple Maps Pedestrian Collection

In 34 of the 40 geographies it has surveyed, Apple has also deployed pedestrians to collect imagery via iPad or backpack. This is a list of the 34 geographies visited by Apple’s pedestrian image collection effort thus far:

Up until early 2023, this list had generally forecasted the ordering of the major countries that Apple has expanded to. So it serves as one clue as to where Apple might expand next.

Metros Surveyed by Apple Maps Backpack Collection

In May 2021, Apple began specifically disclosing the localities visited by its backpack imagery collection effort.

Below is a list of the 142 metro regions that Apple’s backpack imagery collection effort has visited thus far or is currently scheduled to visit:2

The twenty-two metros listed above in bold are those that have received the “Detailed City Experience”.

Apple needs to collect imagery via backpack in order to release the “Detailed City Experience” for a given area. So one way to look at this list is that it’s also a list of all of the metros that Apple is eventually planning to release the “Detailed City Experience” for.

As of now, it appears that Apple is focusing more on the U.S. than any other country:

1  It isn’t entirely clear if Apple had actually visited Malta back in 2019. (Apple had announced on its Image Collection website in late April 2019 that Malta would be surveyed by vehicle between May 2019 and July 2019. But this data has never been released.) ↩︎

2  Cities visited before May 2021 were confirmed via shadows and reflections in Apple’s published Look Around imagery or via photos posted on social media. ↩︎
