After forty-six days of public testing, Apple’s new map expanded to Spain and Portugal on June 7, 2021:
This is the eleventh time that Apple has expanded its new map since its public launch thirty-two months ago in September 2018:
Spain and Portugal are the fifth and sixth countries to receive Apple’s new map. They’re also the first predominately non-English-speaking countries to receive it.
APPLE’S PROGRESS
As of this latest expansion, Apple’s new map now covers 12.9% of Earth’s land area...
...and 6.4% of the global population:
And for the first time, Apple’s new map now covers more than 500 million people worldwide.

In terms of land area, five of Apple’s earlier expansions were larger than Expansion #11—while the other five were smaller. So depending upon how you look at it, this latest expansion is either Apple’s sixth largest—or sixth smallest—to date:
Expansion #11 arrives 179 days after Expansion #10—which is the longest amount of time between expansions to date:
On average, Apple has been expanding its new map every 90 days.

APPLE’S NEXT EXPANSION
At WWDC 2021, Apple announced that Italy and Australia will be the next countries to receive Apple’s new map—with Italy likely arriving first (given its ordering on Apple’s slide):
Apple is likely to start publicly testing Expansion #12 sometime between now and October:
That said, the gap between Expansion #10’s release and the start of Expansion #11’s testing was Apple’s second longest. And whenever we see long gaps in expansion activity, a series of expansions usually follows.
A good example of this is what happened in 2019: after Expansion #3’s release, we saw a 101 day gap until Apple started testing Expansion #4. But then after this gap, Apple released Expansions #4, #5, #6, and #7 in relatively quick succession:
A similar situation occurred last year: we saw a 135 day gap between Expansion #8’s release and the start of Expansion #9’s testing. But then after this gap, Apple released Expansions #9 and #10 in relatively quick succession.
All of this is to say that we can expect Apple to start testing Expansion #12 relatively soon.
