After forty-eight days of public testing, Apple’s new map data was expanded to Australia on December 9, 2021:
This is the thirteenth time that Apple has expanded its new map data since its public launch in September 2018:
Australia is the eleventh country to receive Apple’s new map data. It’s also the first country outside of North America and Europe as well as the first country in the Southern Hemisphere to receive it.
After 3¼ years of expansions—and 7½ years of data collecting—Apple’s new map data now covers 18% of Earth’s land area and 7% of the global population (i.e., 585 million people worldwide):
In terms of land area covered, Expansion #13 is Apple’s second largest to date:
Apple’s in-house map data was expanded to seven new countries this year—more than any other year. However, Apple actually covered less ground this year compared to 2020:
